As a sculptor I bought this book thinking it would illustrate in more detail the physical characteristics of the races as interpreted by Malvina's sculptures. I was very disappointed to get the book and discover there were a paucity of pictures of her actual sculptural work. It's a good biography and fitting for one of the worlds formost pioneer women in the art of sculpture. Someone needs to put together a photographic collection of the work. This one isn't it ! The Field Museum has enough of her work for a stunning book...but they have not moved on the idea.
If your looking for a book with photographs of Hoffman's work this is not it, theres only a few of them in the entire book and there small. Not worth the hefty price.
Malvina Hoffman (June 15, 1885 - July 10, 1966), was an American sculptor and author, well known for her life-size bronze sculptures of people. This magnificent book by Marianne Kinkel, an associate professor of fine arts at Washington State University, fills a need that has been sorely lacking in art history books and in museum exhibitions - the survey of ethnographic sculpture as a cultural biography. Kinkel presents the astonishing show of 91 of her 147 sculptures by noted sculptor Malvina Hoffman that was staged in 1930 in the Marshall Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. The images Hoffman was commissioned to create (for a sum of $!25,000 in 1929 - a huge sum of money during the Great Depression!) included Bushman Family, Chinese Jinriksha Coolie, Bengali Woman, Sioux Indian Male, among others. The drama of this important body of work is produced in the way Kinkel relates the history of the trials and tribulation of Hoffman in fulfilling her obligations. Hoffman's project was influenced by anthropologists, curators, publisher and critics and for the most part Hoffmann won her battles. There is a particular work that remains controversial to this day - a work titled 'Unity of Mankind' which was supposed to compare and contrast the yellow, black and white races: the museum insisted on the existence of four races - Mongolian, Negroid, Caucasian and Australian Aboriginal. The controversy was heated and Kinkel describes the manner in which this disparate decision took place. Not only is the book rich in illustrative materials, it is even richer in the way Kinkel carries the discussion that began with Hoffman's exhibition and brings us into the ongoing history of racism since that time. This is a book that illuminates the work of an artist too seldom appreciated or exhibited, but it is also a superb treatise on he impact of the visual arts on our perception of racial differences - and likenesses. Kinkel introduces the work of Carrie Weems, John De Andrea, Kehinde Wiley, Lorna Simpson and Glenn Ligdon to allow the reader to see how the visual representation of races still captures our imagination and respect today. This is a solid book with art at its core, but it is also a biography of our times, a book that addresses many more aspects of human perception making it a book that should be required reading for all students of social science. 'Races of Mankind: The Sculptures of Malvina Hoffman examines how the veracity of race is continually renegotiated through collaborative processes involved in the production, display, and circulation of visual representations.' Grady Harp, November 11
